In early 80's, eager to save the cultural and architectural Zouk Mikael heritage, the
Municipal Council prevented the destruction of the poet Elias Abou Chabkeh's
house, bought it, and then converted it into a private museum of contemporary
art, a gathering-place for poets and men of letters.

The museum was designed to be able to accommodate exhibitions of paintings,
photographs and artistic events. The Abou Chabakeh museum was officially inaugurated
in January 27, 1997 on the fiftieth anniversary of the poet's death. The roundabout
facing the house shelters among its trees a statue of the poet offered by
the municipality.
